| Meeting Facilitation Many organizations
have found it most effective to utilize professional facilitation for board and
staff planning retreats and other situations that can benefit from the guidance
of an objective outsider who is skilled in facilitation techniques and in nonprofit
organization development. Outside facilitation of a meeting gives every individual
in the group the opportunity to participate fully and equally in the planning,
problem solving and decision-making that takes place. The role of the facilitator
is to create and implement a structure so that the team can successfully meet
its goals for the session. She or he does this by encouraging full participation,
by adhering to the agenda and keeping the meeting focused and on task, by emphasizing
trust, innovation and risk-taking, and by helping the group work toward consensus.
